- IMDEA Nanociencia's researcher Dr. Vasileios Balos has been appointed Leader of a Max Planck Partner Group in collaboration with the Molecular Spectroscopy Department of the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (Mainz, Germany).
- The research of Dr. Balos focuses on developing advanced ultrafast spectroscopic tools to probe the molecular behavior of liquids, combining linear and nonlinear THz spectroscopy with surface-specific nonlinear vibrational techniques such as SFG and DFG spectroscopies.

Madrid, 26 th march, 2026. A new Max Planck Partner Group led by Dr. Vasileios Balos has been established at IMDEA Nanociencia institute. The group’s research is devoted to uncovering the molecular mechanisms that govern the dynamics of liquids and aqueous solutions in bulk and at interfaces. Within the Max Planck Partner Group, the team will investigate how dissolved ions modify the collective molecular motions and energy transfer pathways in liquid water using ultrabroadband nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy. The work will be done in close cooperation with Prof. Mischa Bonn´s Department of Molecular Spectroscopy at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPIP, Mainz, Germany).
Dr. Vasileios Balos studied Applied Physics at the National Technical University of Athens and obtained his PhD in Physics from the University of Amsterdam in 2017 conducting his doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz under the supervision of Prof. Mischa Bonn. He later carried out postdoctoral research at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin before joining IMDEA Nanociencia in Madrid in 2021, with an individual Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions fellowship. Since 2024 he leads the Nonlinear Bulk and Interfacial Molecular Dynamics group (NL-BIMOD) at IMDEA Nanociencia, where he develops advanced spectroscopic techniques to investigate molecular dynamics in liquids and aqueous systems on their intrinsic ultrafast timescales.
Max Planck Partner Groups can be set up with an institute abroad with the proviso that, following a research residency at a Max Planck Institute, top junior scientists returning to a leading and appropriately-equipped laboratory in their home country and carrying out further research on a subject that is also in the interests of their previous host Max Planck institute. The work of the Partner Groups is evaluated after three years and provided the evaluation is positive, can be extended up to five years.
